Journal kept by Edward J. Holmes of conversations at the home of Charles Sumner, Dec. 1870-June 1871. Holmes served as Sumner's personal secretary and as clerk for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee which Sumner chaired. Among the visits and discussions recorded were a visit from Isabella B. Hooker, who tried to persuade Sumner to advocate women's suffrage; conversations with or about Oliver Morton, Carl Schurz, and Secretary of State Hamilton Fish concerning the possible annexation of Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) and President Ulysses S. Grant's leadership of this movement; and conversations about Robert C. Schenck's and Caleb Cushing's negotiations with Great Britain regarding the Alabama Claims.
